A soulful nation is one that recognizes the divinity of the human spirit, and which honors the dignity of the human being by striving for equal opportunity and justice for all.
To live in a soulful nation we must visualize what we want and take inspired action to achieve it.
This is what President Lyndon B. Johnson did as he shepherded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through Congress.
Landmark legislation drafted to outlaw major forms of discrimination against blacks and women, the purpose of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was to empower black voters by ending unequal and discriminatory voter registration requirements, and to end racial segregation in schools, in the workplace, in government facilities, and in businesses - such as restaurants - that served the general public.
This prayer commemorates the anniversary of the bill's signing, and celebrates the step that the U.S. took toward that day toward being a more soulful nation.
